Ray Coyle’s final work of art, and his most famous, is a set of illustrations from a 1929 edition of James Branch Cabell’s controversial Jurgen. This fantasy story was prosecuted for obscenity in 1919, though it was ultimately cleared after a long legal battle, and the nature of many of Ray Coyle’s images may suggest why it created such a stir at that time in history. Now, they make great adult coloring pages!
Ray Frederick Coyle was an interior designer by trade and an incredible illustrator on the side. He often designed bookplates, as well as artwork for books by members of the Bohemian Club
. Sadly, Ray Coyle died very young at the age of 32, but he managed to produce many book illustrations that are still admired today.
